SAT Writing & Language Section Passage

SAT Writing Passage Title: Fishing on Grandmother’s river

My favorite place to visit during my childhood was my grandparents’ house,  1  which overlooked a coastal river in North Carolina. I spent many summers there fishing from the dock in the peaceful mornings and evenings when the river had calmed to a still surface broken only by the jumping mullets. 2

Flowing over a mucky, silty bed, the river usually appeared a dark bluish-brown. We couldn’t see the bottom, so we fished with bobbers floating above the wormed hook. Who can express the excitement of a small child when he sees the bobber jerk down suddenly, its whiteness turning golden in the brown murk?  I experienced this excitement more times than I can recall, though I eventually learned to temper my joy when I more often than not pulled up an empty hook,   4  which became rustier with every use.

Sometimes, my sisters and I would sit together and wait  5  for hours on end. With every fresh catch, we ran over to each other to celebrate, happy that our patience had paid off.  6  Our hooks would bring in bream, bass, and even flounders that had washed in with the brackish water of high tide. We let the smaller ones go but collected the bigger ones  7 My parents enjoyed crabbing from the dock, using old chicken bones with scraps left on them as the bait. If we ever got drowsy waiting for the next bite, they would sneak up behind us with a crab in hand and scare us awake.

One afternoon, I felt a great tug on the line and excitedly began reeling it in. I thought for sure I had caught a good-sized fish, but instead it was a  long, muscular, snake-like creature that flailed and twisted, flapping its tail of a body against the wood.  10  An oily substance covered every place it touched, leaving a powdery, slate-blue residue upon drying. fields such as urban studies, civil engineering, geography, or transportation and logistics. For many positions in the field, a master’s degree is required. Too disgusted to touch it, I trapped the eel under my foot. 11 Meanwhile, my sister was reel-ing in a large catch of her own. Once it looked dead, we brought it to my grandmother, who had us leave it in a bucket for her gardener,  12  who liked receiving food as gifts.

That evening, when we came up to the house for dinner, the gardener called us over. “I thought you said you killed that eel,” he said. “We did,” I answered. He pointed to the bucket: the eel was thrashing like it was possessed. Apparently, eels are hard to kill 13  We all had a good laugh about it. Then he sliced it in half and threw a piece onto the frying pan.
