SAT Writing & Language Section Passage

SAT Writing Passage Title: The Lewis and Clark Expedition

In 1803, the western border of the United States of America was the Mississippi River. Then, with one stroke of his pen,  1  President Thomas Jeffer son, expanded the young nation’s borders west to the Rocky Mountains in what would become known as the Louisiana Purchase. Jefferson  manufactured an expedition to explore and map these unknown lands and to seek passage by water to the Pacific Ocean for the purposes of trade and future expansion.

In May of the following year, thirty-three soldiers led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark headed west along the Missouri River. Two small rowboats took the lead followed by a fifty-five-foot keel boat that carried most of the supplies and men. Resembling a Viking war ship,  3  the keel boat’s twenty-two oars propelled it up the river.

[1] This great adventure brought exciting discoveries and harrowing experiences. [2] Clark  4  reported that it took ten musket balls to bring down the giant grizzly. [3] They recorded over 300 previously unknown animal and plant species, including the mule deer,   5  pronghorn antelopes, and the sea otter. [4] They once encountered a brown bear even more massive than the black bears of the east.  6

The quiet and intense Lewis was the leader of the expedition, while his co-captain, the red-haired and  jovial Clark, was the chief mapmaker.   Subsequently,. the expedition wound into the Rocky Mountains toward the source of the Missouri, the river grew swift and shallow, and they had to abandon the keel boat, along with some gear. The brutal winters left them tired and with few rations.   They might have starved to death had it not been for help from some of the Native Americans they encountered along the way.

Particularly helpful was a young Shoshone woman named Sacajawea, the wife of a French trader named Toussaint Charbonneau. The couple served as interpreters for Lewis and Clark as they encountered new Indian tribes. The sight of Sacajawea with her baby son  10  brought insurance that this group of explorers meant no harm. In the end, the expedition successfully crossed the Rockies and reached the Pacific Ocean. Their maps of previously unknown territories  11  set the stage for future U.S. expansion after their return in the September of 1806.
