SAT Writing & Language Section Passage

SAT Writing Passage Title: The economics of the black death

Life for an English peasant during the feudal era was brief and taxing. Treated as slaves, peasants performed many tasks for their rich lords.  1  In return, peasants had places to live, a little bit of land to scrape a living from, and the lord’s protection. There was very little chance that peasants would rise above their social class-  imagine how they must have felt.  3  With social structures seemingly set in stone, no one could have predicted the violent changes that soon came.

From 1346 to 1353, the Black Death, carried by rats and fleas, decimated Europe, killing as many as one-third of its inhabitants. 4  It likely originated in the dry plains of Central Asia. But this disease, a massive pandemic of bubonic plague, also reshaped the social landscape and brought new opportunities to impoverished workers.  5  could death be a solution to most problems? It was a matter of simple economics.

The fedual lords relied on their peasants to sup-ply all their wants and needs.  6  As the plague raged on, they had fewer and fewer people to work their lands and manufacture the goods their lifestyle required. Though the plague struck both rich and poor, the disparity in their population sizes meant that the plague had disproportionate effects on the demand for labor and on the supply of labor. There were fewer nobles to begin with, and they were better equipped to shield themselves from the masses of dying people, so  they were insulated from the sadness and chaos around them. The much larger population of peasants, on the other hand, decreased severely,  which in turn reduced the labor supply

As a result, the peasants now had the ability to leave the lords they worked for  9 . There were many other lords eager to find new workers to replace the dead ones. While life remained rather grim for them, peasants had suddenly gained mobility and the ability, however small, to seek better employment and better lands.  10  For those who survived, it’s as happy an ending as anyone could have hoped for.
